To obtain full satisfaction from this prized possession, we need to give it the necessary minimum of maintenance and we can ensure that it enjoys a long life by following a few simple rules:
- Before using your watch, read the marker’s instructions;
- Have it checked by an approved specialist every two or three years to ensure that is still watertight;
- If your watch ha stopped, use the crown to rewind the automatic movement. Never shake your watch;
- To avoid bending or breaking the stem, remove the watch from your wrist before you rewind it;
- To avoid damage to the spring, take care not to over wind your watch;
- Do not change the date when the hands are between 22:00 and 02:00. As the wheels are already engaged, there is a danger that hey might break;
- To prevent water from getting into the case, do not operate the crown or the chronograph function under water. If you have a screw-type crown, make sure that is screwed down tightly;
- If you have been in the sea with a waterproof watch, rinse the watch and bracelet in fresh water to avoid the corrosive offect of the salt;
- Do not wear your watch when you engage in sports involving violent movement unless your watch is specially designed for this type of activity. More generally, protect it from falls and heavy impacts;
- Never leave a used battery inside the mechanism. Oxidation could damage the movement seriously or even irreparably;
- However curios you may be, never try to open your watch by yourself. Any maintenance work that needs to be done should be carried out by an approved local dealer, who will generally have received special training from the watchmakers he represents. If necessary, he will have it forwarded to the competent service centre;
- Whether you have a quartz watch or a mechanical movement, you should have the watch overhauled every 5 to 10 years, depending on the amount of use it gets. On this occasion, the dealer will clean the movement, renew the oils and check for watertightness;
- Greasy substances, perfumes, dust and other particles accumulate on the other surfaces of the watch and in the links of metal bracelets.
You can restore your watch to pristine condition by washing it in soapy water and then rinsing. The guarantee offered by the makers covers any manufacturing faults which may have scaped the exhaustive checks carried out during the production process. Although the lenght of gaurantee may vary from one maker to another, two years are usually ample to determine that a watch is free of fault.
